The Friends of St. Lawrence School (FOSLS) is the name given to the Parent and Teacher Association here at St. Lawrence School. You and all the other parents and guardians of its pupils are automatically members of FOSLS.
Firstly we aim to raise money to provide extra resources for the children, over and above those funded by the official school budget. The two main fund raising events that we hold on an annual basis are the Christmas and Summer Fairs. We also arrange three 'Cake Sales' a year; the money raised on these occasions is given directly to the relevant classes rather than central funds, and usually the children themselves have some say in how it is spent.
The second aim of FOSLS is to have fun and this is achieved by organising events for both the children and adults to participate in. Twice a year FOSLS hold a disco for the pupils which always proves popular, and we have, in recent years, held some very successful quiz nights for the grown- ups (and these are not just aimed at the intellectuals). We have also scratched our heads over a couple of 'Chocolate Competitions' which are aimed at the whole family.
The third objective of FOSLS is to establish good relations with the class teachers and other staff of the school. Each class has at least one parent representative. Please don't hesitate to contact us; if we can't help, then we will point you in the direction of someone who can!
As we are a registered charity have to have a formal committee to help plan and run our events. At the beginning of each academic year we hold the AGM when the positions of Chair, Secretary and Treasurer are elected, along with the representatives for each class, the staff and governors. The committee then meets approximately once every half term to discuss ideas and allocate funds. Because you are all members of FOSLS, these meetings are open to any of you wishing to attend and we always welcome new faces and fresh ideas.
Those of you not wishing to take such an active role can still contribute by supporting the events that are organised. After all, the whole point of FOSLS is to help our school to help our children.
