Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
On Friday 15th March, Hawthorn Class investigated how sun tunnels work. Their research showed that sun tunnels can significantly change rooms that do not have access to natural light. We discussed how light reflects off of the tube sides, having the net effect of light going around corners to reach dark rooms. The 'Angle of Incidence' theory was discussed and children learnt that whilst light only travels in straight lines, our experiments showed how light tunnels with bends transfer the light from the source to the destination. We made our own sun tunnels from a selection of resources and we were thoroughly impressed with our results!
On Wednesday 13th March 2019 Year 5 visited Eggar’s School for the day and we all had a great time. First of all we learnt some information about the school and its history from Mrs Kinteh. We also learnt about the Eggar’s experience where you can get involved in lots of different clubs and other events. We found out that the original school was built in 1642 but the new site was built in 1967. Next we headed onto the history class and we discovered a murder mystery with Miss Hopkins. By going around the school we could find clues as to how Ruth Ashdown, who was just twelve, died. As well as finding out information about her and her life in Victorian times, we came up with our own theory about how she died and why. In the afternoon we created batik fish with Mrs Drew using wax and dye on material and then dried them with a hairdryer. When we got back the whole class voted the experience between 7 and 10 out of 10.
Year 1 - Geography
The children have enjoyed building on their compass knowledge from their recent school trip to Gilbert White House. Together we created a mind map of the different UK landmarks that we know. The children then followed instructions using both positional language and compass directional vocabulary to help their Go Jetters visit the different landmarks. Following this activity, the children became cartographers and designed their own symbols and key to represent the famous landmarks - Super work Year 1!
The children travelled to the Earth Zone and spent time finding out about volcanoes and earthquakes. We all felt shaking when we experienced an earthquake for ourselves.
The children also had the opportunity to be palaeontologists, digging up dinosaur bones and using observable features and measurements to identify the dinosaur.
As we left, the children also spotted David Walliams’ yellow post box.
What an exciting Day!
St Lawrence CE Primary School had so much fun on World Book Day, we took part in many activities to continue to develop our love of reading. These included an extreme reading challenge, making book characters from potatoes, Jackanories and story sharing throughout the day and a book exchange. We learnt so much about our favourite books and found some new ones to treasure too!
